How to Protect and Renew Your Energy in Midlife
Your energy is one of the most sacred resources in midlife. Here’s how to protect it.
Connecting with Energy through reflection and warmth. (Photographer not known)
Energy is one of our most important, and dare I say sacred, resources in midlife. I was reminded of this as I created a Tap and Write session focused on Energy, one of the 5 resources in W.I.S.E.R., all of which I believe are critical for women’s wellbeing and health.
At midlife we’ve had a lifetime of experience and if we haven’t yet learned to connect with our inner wisdom, tap into those intuitive whispers deep within us, shift our perspective with kindness, and tune into the ebb and flow of our energy, we’d better get a move on!
Energy Rises and Falls
I never know when I create a Tap and Write session whether the exercises and therapeutic/writing prompts are going to land for the participants, but in this session, I felt it was important to begin with awareness and explore energy as something that rises and falls, sometimes moment by moment.
As we looked at energy throughout a typical day it became apparent that our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energies were influenced by more than getting a good night’s sleep (or not) - our interactions, relationships, how we fuel our bodies and move throughout the day, our thoughts and beliefs, connection with something greater than ourselves, all impact the ebb and flow of our energy.
What Drains You - and What Fuels You?
With this awareness, we explored who and what fueled our energy or depleted it, where it felt heavy and where it lifted easily. Have you experienced giving your energy away or realized that you’re holding onto energy that isn’t yours? It happens - sometimes in the name of caring; sometimes because we’re not aware that we’re doing it; and sometimes because we don’t know we have the ability to create clear energetic boundaries.
Energy That’s Not Ours to Hold
When we carry someone else’s energy we may feel we’re helping - them and us. Over time as our energy quotient fills up, it’s like wearing someone else’s coat on top of our own; it doesn’t quite fit and feels heavy and bulky as we carry the weight of two coats.
There are a number of ways to take the extra coat off and return it to its rightful owner or give it away, trusting the energy will get to where it needs to be. Experiencing the space within us when we release what’s not ours to hold is powerful and a reminder that our energy is ours to nurture and care for.
Simple Tools
It’s always good to have more than one tool or technique to use when we feel our energy needs a boost. EFT Tapping, havening, breathwork, grounding, journalling for healing and clarity, visualization, and movement are simple, yet effective ways to shift energy that feels stuck or sluggish.
Let Your Energy Lead
The key is to pause, listen and allow our energy to lead. It means trusting the signals we receive and then taking the time to care for ourselves with compassion, heeding the whispers before they become desperate pleas for attention.
My invitation to you: tune in to your energy daily, invite it to show you what needs your attention and connection, or what needs to be released. Don’t wait to take action or bypass it - a moment is sometimes all it takes to reset your emotional, physical, mental and spiritual energy, recharge your batteries and protect this precious resource.
